Our Development Model
Economic development is only the first step in the MarketPlace: Handwork of India philosophy of social change. It is an important first step, as financial security for the artisans is a primary concern. Yet in order for change to be meaningful and long-lasting, there must be more than decent wages and working conditions.
MarketPlace's model includes many opportunities related to running a business. Because they are organizing and managing their own cooperatives, the artisans learn about design, production, quality control, and finances. The Leadership by Design approach encourages and promotes leadership among the artisans, positioning them to bring about improvements within their cooperatives as well as positive changes in the lives of their families and communities.
Other programs are platforms for personal development which will help the artisans to reach their full potential. All activities are developed in response to the women's expressed needs and they are shaped and managed by the artisans themselves with support from MarketPlace and SHARE. Counseling sessions help some artisans deal with the challenges and changes in their lives. There are a number of programs including Global Dialog, Social Action and the Armaan Club for Children. By listening to and responding to the artisans over the years, MarketPlace has developed and refined a comprehensive model which truly works.
