This quilt was made by Deanna DeLong, a member of the Town & Country Quilters from Smithville, Missouri.
Around two years ago, some of the artisans had an idea for a public service project for their cooperative. Troubled by the prevalence of domestic violence against women in their community they thought of using the medium of street plays to speak out against this abuse. This was a very gutsy plan, and the women knew that it would take courage to undertake this project. Not only would they, non-actors, have to perform in public, but they would be taking on a social ill that was regularly ignored or even condoned. They have since done a number of performances, which have attracted the attention of other Mumbai organizations. Currently they are planning collaborations with some of these groups and are looking forward to taking their message to a wider audience.
You can help support this program by buying a chance to win this wonderful quilt. Our last raffle raised over $1,800! Money raised in this raffle will directly support the artisans' anti-abuse program by paying for such things as performance coaches, equipment (they are planning to get drums so that they can literally "drum up" an audience and add dramatic beats to the performance), and transportation expenses.
