The value of joy

Chinta Devi values feeling joy because it has come after much hardship. She grew up in a small village in Uttar Pradesh and got married at the age of 15. Her husband went alone to Mumbai to drive an auto rickshaw as there were no jobs in the village. Chinta Devi stayed behind looking after her in-laws and her family of two daughters and two sons.

Occasionally she could do some sewing to earn a little money. After her in-laws died, finances became even more difficult because the funeral ceremonies cost a lot. They had to take out loans so that their elder daughter could get married. They decided that the whole family should relocate to Mumbai for the sake of the remaining children's futures.

But housing is very expensive in Mumbai. Chinta Devi had to sell her jewelry to pay for the deposit and rent on their new home, a 10 ft. by 10 ft. space with a loft where they sleep. Her husband's income was never much and sometimes they had very little to eat. A few months after moving to the city, Chinta Devi learned about Umang, the training center run by MarketPlace.

After completing the course, she began to work with Nirmaan. Earning a major part of the family income has changed her life. She has grown enormously in confidence, skill, and knowledge. She sums up her experience: "After difficult times, I am just now learning to smile again."
