Safiya Begum Khan: Embroidery Artisan, WARE

When Safiya got married, her husband told her to give up her job at WARE. When he lost his job, however, Safiya convinced him to let her rejoin WARE. This was their lifeline when he lost his job again permanently during COVID. When other businesses were closing and laying off, MarketPlace paid all the artisans a subsidy although they could not work. “I was the only person receiving money. This changed the way he looked at me and my job.” He had never understood the commitment and support she felt. She further impressed him when she argued with authorities on his behalf and convinced them not to fine her husband for unauthorized street sales. Now she feels her husband has new respect for her work and her abilities. “Things are much better than before.”

I ordered three tops that were on sale. All were available in my size which was nice. They are nicely made and arrived sooner than I expected.

Wonderful

I recently bought 4 tops and I am so happy with everything about them. They are so comfortable and nice quality. They are soft feeling and I have gotten so many compliments from my friends. They do run on the larger size so if you are looking for a more slim fitting then I would oreder a size down. So happy my sister turned me onto this !

Handsome shirt

Wonderful combination of patterns and colors. Very little dye bleeding when I rinsed the shirt with salt before wearing the first time. M fit was just right (I'm 5'8", 153 lbs). Great addition to my wardrobe of Marketplace India garments.

Happy with Shirt

I am very happy with this shirt which is more jacket-like that I expected. I like its colour and the handiwork required to make it. Due to the ikat fabric overlaid with a block print, it is difficult to see the lines of the garment from photos. (For this reason, I have previously suggested that Marketplace provide line drawings for complex garments). I did not realize that the front is like the Sanika kurta and the pockets are located on this front seam. The side slits of the shirt are quite long, almost to the waist band of my jeans. The long sleeves are not too long for me; however, they may be tied back. It fits me quite well, and I will wear it in the spring and fall, but not summer as the cotton fabric is fairly heavy.
