In 2017 the Pew Center ranked India as the 4th worst country in the world for religious violence. Called "communal" violence in India, incidences rose by 28% between 2014 and 2017. Such hatred is sometimes encouraged and used by politicians. The artisan cooperatives include members from different religions and their bonds defy intolerance. They have learned about each other's beliefs and customs, celebrated the holidays of different faiths, and protected each other when there were tensions in the neighborhood
