Hand Block Printing
Hand block printing is a centuries-old craft in which artisans use intricately carved wooden blocks to stamp designs onto fabric by hand. Each color and motif requires a separate block, and the printer must carefully align each impression, a process demanding great skill, precision, and patience. Natural or low-impact dyes are often used, adding to the individuality of every piece.
The result is fabric that carries the warmth of the artisan’s touch with slight variations that reveal its handmade nature and make every print unique. Hand block printing represents a beautiful blend of tradition, artistry, and sustainability, connecting the maker and wearer through the rhythm of the handmade process.
A significant portion of our hand block and batik block printing fabric comes from Udyog Kala Kendra (UKK). Started by Ziauddin, Udyog Kala Kendra is a testament to what passion and perseverance can achieve. Unlike many block printing workshops where the craft is passed down from father to son, Ziauddin had no family background in this art form. Through determination, experimentation, and learning from others, he has built a thriving workshop known for its quality and innovation. Located near Mumbai, UKK has a close working relationship with MarketPlace and produces many of our signature fabrics. Their specialties include hand block printing, block-printed batik, and tie-dye, all created using traditional methods.
