Artisan Partners

We work with 11 cooperatives in and around Mumbai. Our goal is Developing Leadership for Social Change. As women manage their cooperatives and participate in programs they design and lead, they build skills, question limiting traditions, and become leaders improving life for their families and communities.

Our fabrics come from trusted artisan suppliers across India who specialize in traditional, sustainable techniques such as hand block printing, natural dyeing, and hand weaving. These long-standing partnerships ensure authenticity, quality, and support for craftspeople who keep these heritage skills alive.

Artisan Cooperatives

The cooperatives are the foundation of the MarketPlace development model, fostering both economic independence and personal growth. Artisans gain skills, manage finances, and participate in shaping the direction of their cooperative. Leadership is often shared to expand opportunities for more women to take on responsibility.

Regular meetings support collaborative problem-solving, ensure quality, and keep production running smoothly. Just as important are the strong, supportive relationships within and across cooperatives, helping women face life’s challenges with confidence and solidarity.

Fabric Artisans

MarketPlace is known for its hand-printed and hand-dyed cotton fabrics, which blend traditional Indian techniques with contemporary design. This collaboration with our fabric artisans is rare in India, where middlemen often separate buyers from the artisans.

Our direct partnerships ensure transparency and fairness. Together, we explore new color combinations, develop fresh ideas each season, and learn from one another. The process is rooted in mutual respect and creativity—values at the heart of every MarketPlace garment.
