Ikat Weaving

Ikat is a remarkable technique in which the yarn is dyed before weaving. In single ikat, either the warp or the weft threads are resist-dyed; in double ikat, both are dyed needing more complex and complicated calculations.  The multi-colored ikat, yarns are tied in specific sections to resist dye and dyed.  This is done for each color of the design.  It is then woven and the pattern evolves. Artisans work without digital tools, calculating patterns in their minds and executing them by hand—a process that requires incredible expertise. Ikat is especially impressive, showcasing the mastery of artisans who create intricate patterns entirely by eye and intuition.
