Batik Block Printing

The ancient art of Indian block printing includes distinctive regional styles. In all cases it is a labor–intensive, exacting craft. Teak wood blocks are hand carved with a variety of motifs and there is a wooden handle for the artisan to hold while stamping the cloth. The design can be dipped in dye and stamped directly. However, for Batik block printing the design is stamped with a wax resist which will block the dye when the fabric is dipped in dye. Multiple stampings and dyeing can produce complex patterns and colors. The wax is removed by melting it in very hot water, and the melted wax can be reused. Skilled artisans can combine different techniques to create uniquely beautiful fabrics.

Upon opening the bag, I thought this a woven cotton. But it is indeed a heavier weight cotton knit. I really like how it's not all wimpy and drapey like rayon. Seams are well reinforced but if you rush putting this jumpsuit on you'll likely pop a stitch or two at the neckline. Put your elbows through the arm holes when putting it on. Armholes are gappy but they have to be in order to get into it. I'll probably make the back seam longer so it's easier to get on and off. The tiny button and loop closer at the back of the neck is challenging, but will probably loosen up after wearing it a few times. I'm very pleased with this purchase as I am with all Marketplace Handwork of India.

The cut and material of this jumpsuit feels soft, stretchy and generous. I love the print and attention to detail. After considering the size chart, I ordered a small (6-8) even though I usually wear a size 12, and it fits beautifully! I am 5'7" tall and the pant legs hit mid-calf which is a tad short but still very stylish looking. I am very happy with it!
