Economic empowerment is the foundation of our development model. Income matters. Earning money brings confidence, a stronger voice at home, and inclusion in decision-making. But for us, it cannot stop there. It must also lead to leadership — and, ultimately, to social change.
Many of the women artisans do not immediately see themselves as leaders. Culturally, decision-making has often rested with men. Shifting that mindset takes time and patience.

So how do we build leadership? Not through formal lectures or classrooms. That would never have worked. Like most things at MarketPlace, it grew through conversation, responsibility, and action.
We have three main programs: Darpan (personal development), Social Action (community initiatives), and Armaan Club (children’s growth). The women help set goals, plan activities, and run these programs. Each group elects leaders who meet weekly to organize schedules, coordinate with instructors, manage budgets, solve problems, and keep everyone informed. Leadership develops because they are practicing it — making decisions, handling disagreements, communicating clearly, and taking responsibility.

Last year, to thank these leaders, we organized a picnic just for them. They visited Krushi Paryatan Kendra, an eco-tourism center that celebrates rural life and nature. The day was pure joy. The waterpark was the highlight — and yes, many of them jumped into the pool fully clothed, laughing like schoolgirls. They came ready for fun, in hats and sunglasses, climbing trees, wandering through fields, sharing food, and simply relaxing.

Seeing them outside their usual roles — carefree, playful, confident — was powerful. The day strengthened their bonds and allowed them to see one another differently.

Leadership is not only about meetings and planning. Sometimes, it is about standing together, laughing together, and realizing just how far you have come.
I’m so glad that all these women are getting help to show that they can do things themselves, and not have to wait for permission from others.
