Meet the Artisan: Deepika Rajeshbhai Surti

Embroidery Artisan, WARE Collective

Deepika’s life took shape early—and not easily. Growing up in Mumbai, she chose to marry at 18, leaving her education behind. Her parents did not support her decision. With little money and a pregnancy soon after, those years were marked by uncertainty.

What steadied her was the quiet support of her mother-in-law. Joining WARE Collective also took determination. Her husband was hesitant at first, but once Deepika began earning, something shifted. Income brought stability, confidence, and a stronger sense of self. “I learned some of life’s biggest lessons very young,” she says.

Known for her calm strength, Deepika is a quiet influence within the WARE Collective. An artist as well, she helped bring to life five shared values that emerged after months of discussions and reflection among the artisans: Independence, Development, Quality, Respect, and Joy. Her visual interpretations of these values now hang across the cooperatives. Step by step, Deepika has built a life grounded in courage and self-belief.
