I recently returned from my visit to Mumbai, where I met with the MarketPlace Mumbai staff and the women artisans. The monsoons, which usually end by mid-September, continued into October—reminding me of the rains from my childhood.

These visits always renew my spirit. With the many challenges we face—rising costs, new steep tariffs, and a cautious consumer climate—it’s easy to feel weighed down. But spending time with the artisans, witnessing their optimism and resilience, restores my sense of purpose.

At Pragati Cooperative, one of the newer groups that began during COVID, we all sat together in a circle on the floor, as is the custom and the women spoke about their progress and challenges. They shared how they all come together for lunch, even when there’s no work. If one woman is running late and can’t make rice, she calls another to bring extra. They all share a potluck meal, talking and laughing together.
Moments like these capture the heart of MarketPlace: community, connection, and the strength that comes from working and growing together. Despite the difficulties ahead, the women’s determination and joy remind me that progress continues—and that hope, like the monsoon rains, always returns.
