October and November are festival months in India, and Mumbai comes alive with celebration. Navratri, the nine nights honoring the goddess Durga, is one of the most festive times of the year. Each day has its own color, and people show up dressed in that shade, whether at work, on the train, or in the marketplace. The city feels united in spirit.

Many women fast during the day, eating only fruit, and in the evenings, everyone gathers for garba, a traditional dance done in circles to the beat of drums. The energy is contagious - neighbors, friends, and families all join in with laughter and music filling the air.
The tenth day, Dasara (or Dussehra), celebrates the victory of good over evil and also honors the tools of one’s work. At the cooperatives, scissors, thread, and measuring tapes were placed carefully on tables of worship, and sewing machines were decorated with marigold garlands. Even cars, bikes, and rickshaws across the city were adorned with flowers.

I was fortunate to be present for three pujas—at Prerna Cooperative, Pragati Cooperative, and with the staff. Each person came forward to offer prayers with kumkum powder, rice, and flowers. The ceremonies were simple but full of warmth and gratitude.
In many ways, these celebrations reflect the spirit I see in the women every day - the ability to find joy, strength, and community no matter the challenges. It’s this resilience and optimism that continue to inspire me long after I return home.

These ladies are so inspirational. And I love their celebrations together. Such love and support for each other. That’s what it’s all about. I love the dresses they make and feel the love it takes to make them every time I wear one. And thank you to the leaders that are holding all this together. Thankyou thankyou!
