Artisan Spotlight: Sunita Ramesh Vishwakarma

Position: A 41‐year‐old mother of three living in Mumbai, Sunita is a tailor with Utsah Cooperative, which she joined TK years ago to help support her family. She has since learned to stitch difficult garments, gaining confidence and earning enough to pay for her children's school fees without needing to rely on her husband. “He appreciates that,” she says with pride.

Personal life: Sunita describes her family as “rich in understanding, respect, and gratitude.” She praises her husband's thoughtfulness, which extends to their children. When their son, Mahesh, said that he hoped to have a wife like her, she told him, “To find a wife like me, you need to have qualities like your father.”

MarketPlace's impact: Sunita notes that raising children in Mumbai is very difficult, and she regrets not furthering her education so she could better understand her children's needs. “However, I have learned so much from the different programs run by MarketPlace on parenting, dealing with conflicts and career guidance,” she says. “The best thing I learnt from the sessions was just to take the time to talk to my children.”
