Ever-Evolving: MarketPlace's Legacy of Empowerment

Started in 1980 with just three women artisans, MarketPlace has evolved into a dynamic community of over 200 individuals, impacting the lives of an estimated 800 women and their families over the years. But the heart of the story is not the numbers; it's the people.

Current artisans include seasoned individuals with over 20 years of experience, alongside younger women starting careers and raising families. For example, Sheetal Gamare and Gayatri Vishwakarma, are two young women who recently started to work as tailors at Prerna Cooperative and Nishchay Cooperative, two of the more recently formed cooperatives. Sheetal had tried to earn some money doing freelance sewing for neighbors, but it was unreliable and hard to get payments. Gayatri learned basic sewing in her village and decided to develop her talents. Both women are now finding satisfaction working with the cooperative, earning regular income and enjoying the support and enrichment provided by the group.

The senior members act as role models as they are women who have supported their families and paid for their children's education. These newer artisans have already gained confidence and competence, which they are using to effect positive change for themselves, their families and their communities.

Even after four decades, the mission of MarketPlace remains relevant, offering dignified work that empowers women and leaves an enduring impact on the evolving role of women in society.
